you listen to a voice recording, do you hear distortion from the upper mid at all volumes?
The T nut trick should work and make it air tight. You might have a lead somewhere else like exmaxima1 says. I have found bass is muddier with a leaky sealed box. It might actually sound louder but much muddier, i.e less tight.
